The Employee Criminal Background Check - No Enemies Among Us

Some companies now do an employee criminal background check as a part of their hiring process in addition to drug testing. This has come as a result of some employees staying 'clean' leading up to their interview and drug testing only to revert to their old bad habits once they've been hired.

But Companies Have Gotten Smarter: High Correlation Between Criminal Activity and Drug Use
In a somewhat novel insight, many companies began doing criminal background screening to prevent violent people from entering the workplace. This was a backlash to public outcry when child predators were found to be working in middle and elementary schools. Companies jumped on the bandwagon and started doing their own investigations and found that in their own midst the same employees with drug history also had criminal history. HR put two and two together and thought, "If we screen for criminal activity prior to hire we can make a good guess as to whether someone is faking their way past our drug tests." To quote a couple of beer drinkers from across the Atlantic, "BRILLIANT!"

So now smart companies do a pre-employment criminal background check too. A positive result for violent offense such as robbery, drug use, or loss of vehicle operator's license becomes an automatic red flag, or certainly a proceed with caution.
